HALLOWEEN WINDOW PAINTING CONTEST RESULTS

As you stroll through downtown Sierra 
Madre in the next few days, you’ll be 
treated to some very creative Halloween 
window decorations courtesy of the 
youthful artists who participated in the 
Halloween Window Painting Contest 
sponsored and underwritten by the Sierra 
Madre Civic Club. Over two hundred 
painters aged 9-17 formed groups to 
decorate seventy-four windows. Their 
artistry and creativity made our two sets of 
three judges work very hard to determine 
the contest winners. Participants attend 
Sierra Madre Elementary School, Gooden 
School, St Rita School, Sierra Madre 
Middle School, First Avenue Middle 
School, Marshall Middle School, Alverno 
Heights Academy, and Pasadena High 
School

Using cleanliness, creativity, Halloween 
theme, and use of color as criteria, the 
judges awarded the following groups 
winning certificates:

9 - 10 Year Olds - 1st Place: Window 8 
Casa Del Rey; Celia Goff and Mahenna 
Morrisey 2nd Place: Window 4 Beantown 
Coffee and Bakery: Jonah Breton and Shane Vandevelde, 3rd Place: Window 17 Sierra Fitness: Emily Parry, Isabella Paz, and Erin Kale.

11 - 12 Year Olds - 1st Place: Window 49 The Kensington: Helena Locatelly, Charlie Hardy, Angelina Cao, Isabella Cao, 2nd Place: 
Window 61The Kensington: Grace Villalobos, and Fizzy Panza, 3rd Place: Window 56 The Kensington: Julia Pevsner, Emma Hopkins, 
and Emma Watson. 

13 - 14 Year Olds - 1st Place: Window 67 Pantorium Cleaners: Grace Lim, Isabel Eisenberg, Malia Wilson, 2nd Place: Window 66 
Poppy Cake Baking Company: Cassabdra Kuo, Grace Miller, Liv Bjorgum, and Chloe Brandon, 3rd 
Place: Window 69 Arnolds Frontier Hardware: Mareli Moreno, Jasmine Keoroghlian, and Sarah Corder. 

15 – 17 Year Olds - 1st Place: Window 74 Haynes and Oakley Architects: Melody Wu, Laura Chen, and 
Vanessa Prata, 2nd Place: Window 72 Haynes and Oakley Architects: 

Emma Allen and Adriana Tovalin, 3rd Place: Window 73 Haynes and Oakley Architects: Devin Gaughan, 
Isaiah Raya, Owen Vandevelde, and Sean Miller.

Congratulations to all the winners and our thanks to all the painters for helping us decorate Sierra 
Madre for Halloween. Committee chair Margaret Switzer, her right-hand woman Pat Krok, and many 
members from the Sierra Madre Civic Club worked long hours organizing, preparing for, and hosting 
the contest. We needed community support to make the event successful and we’d like to thank the 
forty-one merchants who allowed us to use one or more of their windows. A special thanks goes to 
Beantown Coffee & Bakery, Buccaneer Lounge, Casa Del Rey, Dog Wash America, Foothill Home Care 
Partners, Goody Bags, Millennium Pension Services, Petunias, Sierra Fusion, Skin Rituals, Subway, and 
Yogurt & More who also donated money to offset our costs for supplies and window washing. Students 
from Alverno Heights Academy and Sierra Madre Middle School donated a whole afternoon helping 
us tape the seventy four window spaces to use and covering brick store fronts and window boxes with 
newspaper to protect them from drippy paint. Their attitude and helpfulness made a tough job much 
easier. And, of course, we appreciate the time and thought our two teams of judges put into determining 
our contest winners. So do enjoy our beautiful, scary, funny, cute, spooky, clever, and unusual window 
decorations knowing that it indeed does take a village.

 The Sierra Madre Civic Club is a civic and philanthropic organization. We meet the second Thursday of 
every month at 7:30 PM in the Hart Park House. You are welcome to join us to find out the other fun ways 
we support special events in Sierra Madre and how we raise money to give back to the community.

RISE OF THE ROCKET GIRLS CHOSEN AS 

ONE BOOK ONE CITY SELECTION 

It’s official! Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women 
Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to 
Mars by Nathalia Holt is this year’s choice for the 
One Book One City Program sponsored by the 
Sierra Madre Public Library. 

 Bestselling Rise of the Rocket Girls is the true 
story of the women who helped launch America 
into space. In the 1940s and 1950s, when the new 
Jet Propulsion Laboratory needed mathematicians, 
they recruited a group of young women who 
transformed rocket design, helped bring about the 
first American satellites, and made the exploration 
of the solar system possible. 

 Nathalia Holt, Ph.D. is a science writer and 
author of Cured: The People who Defeated HIV. 
Her work has appeared in The New York Times, 
The Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, Slate, 
Popular Science, and Time Magazine. 

 Meet Holt on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017 at 7:00 pm 
in the Sierra Madre Elementary School auditorium 
when she talks about her book. Her talk is the 
grand finale of the annual One Book One City 
(OBOC) program.

Mars and back during this hour-long presentation.

read and discuss the same book during a month of

YOU CAN DROP OFF YOUR VOTE 
BY MAIL BALLOT AT CITY HALL!

 The City of Sierra Madre has been selected by 
the Los Angeles County Clerk’s Office as a drop 
off for Vote by Mail (VBM) ballots. The County 
implemented this program for secure and easy 
drop-off of that will ensure voters have 

a convenient place to drop-off their VBM ballot 
for the November 8th General Election.

 The ballot box is located in the City Manager’s 
Office at City Hall.

 All other registered voters may place their 
votes at their designated polling place. For more 
information, or to find your designated polling 
place, please visit the Los Angeles County 
Clerk’s website at www.LAVote.net
