Pasadena to Celebrate
130th Birthday June 12

Chalk Festival
New Circle of
Champions

Civil Rights
Lawsuit filed
Against
Police Chief
and Officers

This Father’s Day Weekend
the Pasadena Chalk Festival
is set to highlight a new
Circle of Champions, which
showcases artists who have,
in the past won, “Best of
Festival” or “First Place” three
times among the entire field
of artists. The festival will
take place June 18 and 19
from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.

 Celebrating its 24th year,
the Pasadena Chalk Festival
places over 25,000 sticks of
pastel chalks in the hands
of hundreds of Madonnari
(Italian for street painter) to
spend the weekend creating
spectacular murals on
concrete areas throughout the
shopping center that stretches
over three city blocks. In
every style imaginable, from
classical to contemporary,
whimsical and fantastic, to
socially relevant, the murals
are designed and created by
independent artists as well as
teams representing schools,
creative companies, cultural
organizations and artistic
families.

 In addition to the
extraordinary opportunity
to watch artists at work,
guests can enjoy live music
throughout the weekend and
children can get creative in
the Kid’s Chalkland, where
kids can make Father’s Day
cards for dad. There will also
be a Pasadena Police Classic
Car Show on Sunday from
10am to 3pm featuring classic
and fun cars as well as the
Pasadena Police Helicopter.

 At the conclusion of the
festival, participating artists
will select the outstanding
murals of the festival from
amongst their peers. Awards
include 1st, 2nd and 3rd
Place Best in Festival, Best
Technique, Best Use of Color,
Best Artist Original Design
and more. Festival visitors
will also have the opportunity
to vote for their favorite
mural, the “Paseo Colorado
People’s Choice” award.

 The “Master Madonnari”
being honored in the Circle of
Champions are: Arlou Somo,
Maria Diaz and Moe Notsu.
The Pasadena Chalk Festival
benefits the community
arts programs of the Light
Bringer Project, a nonprofit
arts organization with the
mission to build communities
through the power of the arts
and education.

 Attorneys filed a Complaint
last week against the Pasadena
Police Department for
Violations of Civil Rights on
behalf of Michelle Rodgers —
the sister of a Pasadena Police
Sergeant.

 According to the complaint,
filed by Attorneys John Burton
and William Paparian, in late
February, at the Pasadena
home of Verta Bugh, 85,
Pasadena Police Sgt. Michael
Bugh, who is her son, directed
the arrest of his sister, Michelle
Rodgers, after he learned she
was at a local bank cashing
a check from their mother’s
credit card account.

 The complaint states that Bugh
later that day improperly used
his authority as a supervisor
in the Pasadena Police
Department to direct four
police officers and possibly
others, with the approval of
Sgt. Keith Gomez, to arrest
Rodgers on felony elder abuse
charges without a warrant
or probable cause, violating
established federal and state
constitutional laws.

 The complaint also states that
while the arrest was in progress,
Bugh used his position with the
Pasadena Police Department
to confiscate his sister’s set of
keys to their mother’s car as
well as the $1,000 in cash from
the check written by Bugh.

 The complaint also states that
Pasadena Police Chief Phillip
Sanchez was aware of alleged
misconduct on the parts of
Bugh and Gomez.

Along with Sanchez, defendants
named in the complaint
include the City of Pasadena,
Pasadena Police Department,
Bugh, Gomez, and a number of
other Pasadena Police Officers.

Both the Pasadena City
Prosecutor’s Office and the
L.A. County District Attorney’s
Office rejected all charges
against Rodgers.

The case has been assigned in
the U.S. District Court, Central
District of California in Los
Angeles.

Soccer at Rose Bowl to
Impact Arroyo Area Voters

 Pasadena voters who live in
the Arroyo Seco area and who
intend to cast ballots at two
polling places near the Rose
Bowl Stadium are reminded to
go to the polls early to avoid
traffic and possible delays due
to the Copa America soccer
match on June 7.

 As an alternative, voters may
wish to request an online
“Will Call Ballot” for pickup
at Pasadena city hall, 100
N. Garfield Ave., by visiting
the County of Los Angeles
Registrar Recorder/County
Clerk website www.lavote.net
or by calling the County at
(562) 466-1323. Will-call ballot
requests generally take 48 hours
to process.

 The pilot “Will Call Ballot”
program is offered locally by the
County through a partnership
with the Pasadena City Clerk’s
Office and is available at
Pasadena city hall now through
the close of business on Monday.

 The program includes
both weekday and weekend
early voting opportunities,
7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday
through Friday, and 9 a.m. to
4 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 and
Sunday, June 5. Ballots must
be preordered for “Will Call”
pickup at city hall.

 The two polling places within
the Arroyo Seco that might be
impacted on Election Day due
to the Copa America soccer
match include the Pasadena
Fire Station 38, 1150 Linda Vista
Ave., and a private residence at
1725 Casitas Ave.

All polls open at 7 a.m. and
close at 8 p.m., All voters are
urged to go to the polls early,
especially in the Arroyo Seco
area before 4:30 p.m., to avoid
traffic and possible delays.

 Limited, short-term parking
will be available adjacent to each
polling location. For voters
casting ballots at Fire Station 38,
please review parking signage
near the polling location and
park only in designated parking
areas as this is a working fire
station that must be available to
respond to emergency calls.

Office is also available to
answer questions and provide
additional information by
