PASADENA UNIFIED ANNOUNCES THE SELECTION OF

FIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

Pasadena, CA – The Pasadena Unified School
District (PUSD) is pleased to announce the
selection of Daniel Bagby as principal of
Eugene Field Elementary School.

“I am pleased to welcome Mr. Bagby to the
PUSD leadership team,” said Superintendent
Brian McDonald. “With his proven track
record of effectively educating culturally
and linguistically diverse learners, he is
well-prepared to lead the students, staff and
community of Field Elementary School and
its model dual language immersion program
to further a culture of success and continuous
improvement that meets the needs of every
student.”

Mr. Bagby brings more than 25 years of
experience as an educator to his new position.
He joins PUSD from the Los Angeles Unified
School District, where he has been principal of
the Ambassador School of Global Education
since 2014. The elementary school, one of
six autonomous small schools of the Robert
F. Kennedy Community Schools, is part of
both national and international networks that
create opportunities for teachers to collaborate on student projects.
The school offers foreign language instruction in Korean, Spanish,
and Mandarin, and has established partnerships to promote
understanding among the people, leaders and institutions of
the U.S. and Asia. Mr. Bagby’s experience includes working as a
program coordinator, curriculum specialist, instructional coach,
and bilingual teacher.

“I am thrilled and humbled to be selected as the new principal of
Field Elementary School and will bring my passion for student
achievement to this new position with the
Pasadena Unified School District,” said
Mr. Bagby. “The school, with its Mandarin
dual language immersion program, has an
established reputation of translating its beliefs
about children and their capabilities into
action with spectacular results. My desire is
to harness this vision and partner with school
stakeholders to further the school’s culture of
success to meet the needs of all students.”

Mr. Bagby has a Master of Arts in Educational
Leadership and Administration from
California State University, Los Angeles, and
a Bachelor of Arts from Biola University.

Mr. Bagby was selected after a competitive
process that included feedback provided
by Field Elementary School stakeholders,
students, employees, and parents that
informed the development of the new
principal profile.

Mr. Bagby’s appointment is effective July 1,
2016. Former principal Ana Maria Apadoca
has been selected as the new principal of
Altadena Elementary.

DUARTE HIGH SCHOOL
ANNOUNCES CLASS OF
2016 VALEDICTORIAN &
SALUTATORIAN

SIERRA MADRE WOMAN’S
CLUB’S STUDENT ENTRANT
WINS FIRST PLACE ART AWARD
AT SGVD AND CFWC 2016
COMPETITIONS

(Duarte, CA) – A memorable year for Duarte High School’s 242 seniors is
coming to a close with events leading up to graduation at the Falcon Stadium on
Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 6:30 p.m.

Prior to that occasion, however, is an ongoing stretch of events that help salute
and single out the accomplishments of the seniors.

The Class of 2016 represents a unique group of seniors, according to Principal
Mark Sims. “In my interaction with them over the last two years, I’ve come to
enjoy their personalities,” he said. “They’ve been people who haven’t been about
chasing grades but rather, they have pursued learning for learning’s sake.”

Two of the top performing students are Valedictorian Michelle Liem and
Salutatorian Michael Hoo, who represent much of the diversity of the class.

Liem is headed to UC San Diego to study bio-engineering. She selected
that course of study because it combines calculus, physics and biology. It’s a
relatively new field and is attractive to her because of her work ethic and passion
for learning. Liem has this message for future graduates: “Find something you
enjoy, something that grounds you, and treat it as a labor of love.”

Hoo will continue his education at New York University (NYU) in the field of
game design. He credits his friends for support and the Internet for his success
because it offers so many resources. He believes that game design will bring
people together. His Words of Wisdom:
“You do you.”

For all seniors, many events will fill
the days until graduation on June 8.

 Included among those events have
been the Senior Presentations, in which
each of the graduates talks about the
learning outcomes of their final year at
DHS and indicates how various activities,
classes, or sports, helped shape their
learning process. Those presentations
replaced what were previously known
as the Senior Projects. Each student
presented for up to four-minutes before
a three-person faculty panel Wednesday
and Thursday (May 25 and 26).

Many of the seniors will be honored
at the Senior Awards Breakfast on
Monday, June 6, at the Embassy Suites
in Arcadia, starting at 8 a.m. Students
will learn what scholarships and other
honorariums they are going to receive at
this event.

 Earlier, DHS held the Academic
Awards Night at Cooper Auditorium at
City of Hope.

 “This event doesn’t necessarily
recognize those with the highest
GPAs, but includes those with great
work ethics, those who have overcome
adversity, those who have made great
improvements,’’ said Sims.

“This recognizes a lot of strong
students, but might include someone
with a 2.5 GPA as well as those with the
best grades.”

Shanti Rozario, a seventh grader at
Pasadena Christian School and a student
at nearby Pasadena’s Art Studio, won
first place in her category at the San
Gabriel Valley District contest in March,
and the California Federated Women’s
Clubs contest in May, 2016. A member
of the General Federation of Women’s
Clubs, Sierra Madre Woman’s Club was
founded February 1907 and continues
its participation in community activities
and charitable contributions through
promotion of educational, philanthropic
and civic advancement and social
activities, including its social fundraisers
and the Wistaria Thrift Shop. Facebook.
