DUARTE COUNTY COMMUNITIES:
WE ARE AN ENTITY

By Joan Schmidt

A few weeks ago,
I attended the
ribbon cuttingof the 2nd brick
sign welcoming
those enteringthe county area.
It is absolutelybeautiful, and
when you leave the area, the back side says,
“Thanks for visiting.”

Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte President David
Hall spoke and said, “The cities surrounding thecounty areas are three separate entities. Nowthis is a fourth entity- our unincorporated areais finally recognized as its own special entity.”

It’s been a long and difficult journey. It beganin 1992 when Temple Station Deputies who servethe Unincorporated “MAD” Areas were shot
at. Community meetings were held at MaxwellSchool. Attending were Captain Mirabella,
Sgt. Sammy Jones, Sarah Flores, Chief Deputyfor Supervisor Antonovich and concernedcitizens. Pamela Park Director Maurice Wyre, an Acton resident explained their “TownCouncil”, and so the “MAD” Town Council was
formed and met twice a month. Through the

years, Council Members have served on variousboards: a few include Duarte/Monrovia SchoolBoards, Habitat for Humanity, and Duarte EdFoundation. Arcadia’s Carolyn Zieglar was thecatalyst for Monrovia Transit serving Countyareas and the Stop Sign at Daines/Tyler.

MANY improvements and services havebeen provided throughout the years becauseof Supervisor Antonovich and the Sheriff’sSept. LASD had SEVERAL C.O.P.S. Programsin various target areas. Surveys were givento residents; filled out; results tallied. Then a
special “Town Hall Meeting” was held. TheSheriff’s Dept. brought in ALL needed CountyAgencies to address these issues. Also there’sbeen several great programs at Pamela Park.
Soon the “PARKS AFTER DARK” will resume
featuring music, movies and more for families.

16, 6:00- 9:00 pm at Pamela Park, 2236 GoodallAve. Duarte is free for youth of ALL AGES! It hasmusic, games, prizes, activities, face paintingand more.

The Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte Town Council
meets every third Wednesday. Please come outto learn what’s going on in YOUR communityand become involved. The Council meets June
15 at Pamela Park, Duarte, and July 20, All
Nations Church, Monrovia. Visit the MAD
Town Council on Facebook for more info.
