TABLE FOR TWO by Peter Dills

COLOMBO’S

Eagle Rock is certainly the up and coming place to
live. Many hipsters and new money are making
Eagle Rock their home. Sound Familiar? For a city
to thrive, I think you need good restaurants. No...
not chains, I guess some people think it is a
big deal if Souplantion opens near them. For
me, the neighborhood restaurant is KING!!!
A good stiff drink at a reasonable price, friendly
service and portions still big enough to get a
doggy bag to take home with you. Colombo’s
in Eagle Rock is such a place. Everything
aforementioned plus nightly entertainment.
This isn’t Arnie Morton’s, but the prices aren’t
either. The menu includes pizza ($14 range),
pasta, a better then average Lasagna ,daily
fish specials, steaks and wines by the glass.
Is this the greatest meal that I have ever had? Well, I can’t
say that, honestly. I am still in search of that meal. But
I can say the best $25 Porterhouse in Los Angeles.
The restaurant has been in business for
over 50 years and has the red leather seats,
corked ceilings and a long bar. Go on to their
website at colombosrestaurant.com for updated
pictures and prices. Old School at it’s finest!
Back to the food and what to order? Two ways
to order here - Family style for the pizzas and
lasagna or, if it is date night, the Porterhouse Steak
and Grilled Salmon On my visit I was trying, and I
do mean trying, to stay at 170 pounds so I skipped
dessert but am told that they are yummy as well.
Entrees come with either Baked Potato or Spaghetti.

WE’D LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO SAVOR THE
FLAVOR'S MADELINE ROMO.

Madeline, can you briefly walk us through your
story – how you started and how you got to where you
are today.

Established in 1998, Savor the Flavor has been
focusing on the International Fancy Food Show award
winners. We decided on this venture because of our love
for food and entertaining friends and family. We refer to
ourselves as the Gourmet Gals! We try everything before
bringing it into the shop. If it doesn’t WOW us, then it
doesn’t get put on our shelves.

We travel all over to find all these specialty foods
and gifts. We go to Las Vegas, New York, Atlanta,
Chicago, San Francisco, Philadelphia (just to name a
few) and attend all these international gift and food
shows and bring back the best-of-the-best and the
award winners… Our goal has been to find the best
tasting specialty foods as well as gourmet gifts, home
decor and personal luxuries and offer them to any and
all who share our passion.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to
pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with
enough people to know that it’s not always easy.
Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?

Being that we’ve been in business for 19 years,
we’ve come across some rough patches but we made
it through and we always come out stronger. There
have been times when the economy has left the shop
pretty quiet and we needed to find a way to get out
name out there and remind people to keep shopping
and supporting their small towns. That’s when
we incorporated our loyalty program and we also
reinvested a lot of time and energy into social media
and branding. Every tough patch gives us a chance to
build up our business and find new ways to improve.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Savor the
Flavor – tell our readers more, for example what
you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you
apart from others.

We are a family owned and operated business and
we take pride in that. We also focus on customer
service and our goal every day is to make every
customer who walks through our door leave happier
than when they walked in. We take pride in all of our
products and we gift wrap all our items so it’s a one-
stop shop.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?

I’m looking to try and get better with branding
my business and getting a bigger and better online
presence.
