LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Re: ‘Gabe’ Engeland Calls It Quits (June 19)

As a former resident of both Sierra Madre (1985-1994) and Los Altos (1965-1967), I wish Mr. Engeland
good luck on the new job up north.

Gabe, just remember that the “Al” in Los Altos rhymes with “Sal” or “Al” -- not “mall” (as I’ve heard more
than a few Southlanders garble it).

And if you ever get into a disagreement with an old-timer, just offer to settle the matter over an ice cream at
Clint’s. The old soda fountain is long gone, but the memories of those frosty treats are sure to bring a smile
to anybody who spent his tender years in that little green slice of the Santa Clara Valley.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I would like to voice my deep concern that the City Council is considering cancelling both regular City
Council meetings at a time when there are projects under consider-ation, and natural events, which will
significantly impact our community.

The people of the community deserve to be able to address our City Council as we face:

1. An ever-worsening, truly unprecedented drought and its impact on our citizens
2. The potential for one of the worst fire seasons in our history
3. The proposal for the 42-home development on the current site of the monas-tery including its longterm
impact on our water infrastructure. The current plan is not water neutral and includes:
1. pre-purchasing a resource that may not exist in 50 years
2. pre-purchasing water without consideration for the compounding ef-fects of inflation (which is not
fair to other citizens in our community)
4. A need for more transparency by our city leaders including moving all future City Council meetings
to a time and place which is accessible by the majority of our tax-paying citizens (e.g., not in the middle
of work hours).
I do hope that you will reconsider your decision to cancel the City Council meetings in August.
Regards,

Todd Cranston-Cuebas
