EXERCISING IN EXTREME HEAT

Exercising outdoors can be fun, but when temperatures soar, it can also be risky. No 
doubt you’ve seen someone in long sleeve attire going for a run during the hottest part 
of the day. Not advisable. Make sure you know how to protect yourself during the 
hottest days and understand the consequences of not doing so.

Heat-related illnesses occur when the body’s cooling mechanisms become 
overwhelmed, leading to symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to life-threatening 
conditions. The most common heat-related illnesses are heat cramps, heat exhaustion, 
and heat stroke. Do you know the difference between them? 

Understanding Heat-Related Illnesses

• Heat Cramps are painful muscle spasms that often occur in the legs, arms, 
or abdomen. These are typically caused by a loss of electrolytes and fluids through 
sweating and can be an early warning sign that the body is struggling to cope with the 
heat. What to do? Stop activity immediately and rest in a cool place. Drink water or 
an electrolyte solution, and gently stretch or massage the affected muscles.

• Heat Exhaustion is more severe and occurs when the body loses too much 
water and salt. Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, and an elevated pulse. If left untreated, heat 
exhaustion can escalate to heat stroke. What to do? Move to a cooler environment, lie down, and elevate your legs. Drink cool water 
or sports drinks, and use a cool, damp cloth on your skin. If not better in 30 minutes, seek medical attention.

• Heat Stroke is the most dangerous heat-related illness and requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms include a high 
body temperature (104°F or higher), confusion, slurred speech, rapid heartbeat, and even loss of consciousness. Heat stroke can cause 
damage to the brain, heart, kidneys, and muscles, and can be fatal if not treated promptly. What to do? Call 911 immediately. While 
waiting for medical help, move to a cooler place, remove excess clothing, and use ice packs or a cold bath to reduce body temperature.

How to Exercise Safely in Extreme Heat

Choose the Right Time for Exercise - Timing is everything when it comes to exercising in extreme heat. The best times to be active 
outdoors are early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler, and the sun is less intense. Avoid exercising 
between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the peak hours for heat and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. 

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate - Staying hydrated is one of the most important factors for safe exercise in hot weather. Start drinking 
water several hours before your workout and continue throughout your activity. Electrolyte balance is critical. When you sweat, your 
body loses not only water but essential salts like sodium and potassium. For longer workouts, consider sports drinks or electrolyte 
supplements to replenish what is lost and prevent heat cramps and other symptoms.

Clothing - Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and moisture-wicking fabrics that help keep you cool and allow sweat to evaporate more 
quickly. Light-colored clothing reflects sunlight, while dark colors absorb it, increasing your body temperature. Accessories like a 
wide-brimmed hat or UV-protection sunglasses can shield you from direct sunlight.

Protect Your Skin - Sunburn accelerates dehydration and hinders the body’s ability to regulate temperature. Always apply a sunscreen 
with an SPF of 30 or higher, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or heavy sweating. Use a 
lip balm with SPF as well.

Listen to Your Body - Pay attention to how your body feels, and don’t ignore early warning signs. If you start to feel lightheaded, weak, 
nauseous, or notice that you are no longer sweating (a sign of heat stroke), stop exercising immediately, find a cool or shaded area, 
and drink water. Rest until you feel better, and seek medical help 
if symptoms persist or worsen.

Cool Down Properly - Move to a shaded or air-conditioned 
environment, drink cool fluids, and take a cool shower to lower 
your body temperature. Cooling down properly can help prevent 
post-exercise heat conditions.

Move Indoors - On super-hot days when heat is dangerously high 
and air quality bad, consider working out indoors. Activities like 
swimming, using a treadmill, or joining a gym class can keep you 
fit during days of extreme heat.

Be aware. Understand what to do in case you or someone you 
know shows signs of heat related issues. With a few precautions, 
you can stay active without compromising your health in hot 
weather.
