program. He was an active parent
coaching his daughter Lisa’s soc-cer
team; traveling to watch his son
Mark compete for USC rowing; his
son Christopher as he played soccer
at Westmont College and his
son Jonathan fence and cycle at
Cal State Long Beach. His world
revolved around his wife and children
, then came his dogs. Over
the years he had a total of eight
golden retrievers and two Malti-
Poos all rescues. v
In 2000 Rod and Joan moved to Si
erra Madre where they lovingly restored
their 1912 craftsman home
fulfilling a childhood dream. At
the age of 65, Rod joined the Sierra
Madre Volunteer Fire Department
where he served for five years.
An avid reader, he also served two
terms as a Sierra Madre Library
Trustee.
In 2016, Rod and Joan were named
Sierra Madre’s Citizens of the Year.
Rod was a man of strong moral
values and ethics, qualities that he
instilled in his children.
Rod is survived by his wife of 67
years, Joan, his children Mark (Lucinda),
Christopher (Pamela), Lisa
Paul (Charlie), and Jonathan (Darcy).
His daughter Susan preceded
him in death.
He also leaves eight grandchildren
and five great grandchildren
A celebration of life will be held at
a later date

SHIRLEY BETZ SUTER 1926 - 2020
Shirley Betz Suter age 94 passed away peacefully on Sunday October
25th at her home in Sierra Madre. She was survived by her second
husband Bill; daughters Karen Coxwell, Kristen Reis and Katherine
Riley; son, Richard Betz; grandchildren Alex Reyes, Meghan Clark
(Scott), Josh Coxwell (Sandy), Erinn Rosendahl (Adam) and Brian
Riley and 4 great grandchildren.
A graduate of Middlebury College as a young woman she chaired the
Little Hoover Commission in New York City. After moving to California
with her first husband she spent her working life as a school
teacher. An avid Bridge player Shirley was a Silver Life Master and
at age 88 met her sec-ond husband at the bridge table with whom she
spent happy years for the rest of her life.
