For the first time in PHS history, the Pride of Pasadena Band and Color Guard (shown above) have 
qualified as finalists to the SCSBOA Field Championships! 

 The Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association is a non-profit organization 
whose active membership is drawn primarily from educational institutions: elementary schools, 
junior high/middle schools, senior high schools, colleges and universities. Additional membership 
includes students and others (private instructors, business establishments) who are active in the musical 
community.

The Association is dedicated to enriching the cultural environment by helping all students develop a 
greater appreciation of music, providing the means for exploring both vocational and non-vocational 
opportunities in music, raising performance standards, and improving learning techniques.

MARTIN LUTHER KING COMMUNITY 
COALITION 2025 ESSAY CONTEST

 On January 20, 2025, the nation will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 's birthday. The 
Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition, Pasadena Unified School District, Pasadena Tournament 
of Roses and Aspires West in conjunction with the City of Pasadena will host a celebration. 

 The King Coalition is a group of community people working to make Dr. King’s dreams 
become a reality. Part of the celebration will be the culmination of the essay and visual arts 
contests. Awards will only (unless prior permission is granted) be presented to the winners 
present at the MLK program in January. All students will receive Martin Luther King, Jr. 
certificates for their participation.

GUIDELINES FOR PARTICIPATION

Any student in grades 4-12 is eligible. Individuals will compete within the appropriate category: 
Elementary, Middle or High School. 

IMPORTANT DATES & INFORMATION

All essays must be received by: 6:00 pm Friday, December 13, 2024

If mailed, the essays must be postmarked on or before: December 13, 2024

The winners will be notified by: Friday, January 10, 2025
