Thanksgiving Fire Safety

Thanksgiving is next week, and the San Marino Fire Department
wants to encourage all San Marino residents to be fire safe in the
kitchen. Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home fires
involving cooking equipment. Practice the following safety tips,
that are available on the City website at www.SanMarinoCA.gov/
FireSafety, to ensure your family has a safe and happy holiday:

Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you
can keep an eye on the food.

Stay in the home when cooking your turkey or any other food in
the oven and check on it frequently.

Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids
should stay 3 feet away.

Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or
splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.

Keep the floor clear so you don't trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks
or bags.

Keep knives out of the reach of children.

Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate
warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy
reach of a child.

Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children - up
high in a locked cabinet.

Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle.

Test your smoke alarms to ensure they are working.

Have activities that keep kids out of the kitchen during this busy
time. Games, puzzles or books can keep them busy. Kids can get
involved with recipes that can be done outside the kitchen.

The City of Pasadena is in the process of updating its 2019
Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP). The purpose of the City’s
LHMP is to identify goals, objectives, and mitigation strategies for
reducing the impact of hazards such as earthquakes, wildfires, and
flooding. If you live or work in the City of Pasadena, we would like
your feedback to help us in the planning process.

What is a Local Hazard Mitigation Plan?

The Local Hazard Mitigation Plan is a document that outlines the
City’s long-term strategy to eliminate risk to human life, property,
and infrastructure from future natural and human-caused
disasters. To ensure the plan stays current, FEMA requires the plan
to be updated every 5 years. With our last plan adopted in 2019,
we are actively working on our update. An up-to-date plan ensures
that residents are prepared and the City remains eligible for federal
mitigation funds.

The essential steps of hazard mitigation planning are:

- Identify and profile hazards that affect the local area.

- Identifying City capabilities that can assist in implementing
mitigation projects.

- Analyze the people and facilities at risk from those hazards.

- Develop a mitigation strategy to lessen or reduce the impact of the
profiled hazards.

- Implement the hazard mitigation actions and projects.

What can residents and community partners do to help?

Federal regulations for mitigation plan approval require that
stakeholders and the public are given opportunities to be involved
in the plan’s development process. Input from community members
can strengthen the content and outcomes of the mitigation plan. The
public is represented by community members and organizations
that have an interest in City projects and actions to mitigate hazards
and save lives and property.

To achieve our outreach objective, the City will post hazard
mitigation plan progress and key documents on the following
platforms:

City Website

Social Media Platforms

City Press Releases

Print materials at City Hall and Public Libraries

Develop and distribute a Hazard Mitigation Survey

Conduct Public Outreach Workshops

Present and adopt the plan at a City Council meeting.

The City will continue to update the LHMP website throughout the
planning process and post updates on our social media platforms.
To meet the needs of our community, all outreach material will be
available in English, Spanish and Chinese to ensure participation
from a majority of the City. If other languages are needed,
accommodations can be made.

Community input is an important part in ensuring our community
is resilient after a disaster strikes. Please complete a short Hazard
Mitigation Survey at: surveymonkey.com/r/23VS3MJ to share
your insights on the threats most important to you and gauge our
community’s level of preparedness.

Services Manager, Nallely Procopio at PreparedPasadena@

Joint Message from PUSD
and the City of Pasadena

As partners united in service to our community, the Pasadena
Unified School District, the City of Pasadena, and the Pasadena
Police Department are committed to maintaining safe and
welcoming spaces for everyone.

We recognize that the recent election and some of the intense
rhetoric surrounding it may be impacting individuals in our
community. It’s important to reaffirm our shared commitment to
safety and respect for all, regardless of race, immigration status,
identity, or circumstance.

Pasadena Unified schools are safe and protected spaces,
with federal and state laws in place, along with long-standing
policies and practices that ensure that our campuses are safe
and welcoming places regardless of the immigration status or
citizenship of our students and their families. We want to assure
you that vital services such as school meal programs, teaching
and learning, and arts, enrichment, and athletic programs
continue uninterrupted and that our priority is the well-being
and safety of all students. Support is available for students who
may be feeling increased anxiety during this time, and we ask
that you contact your school’s wellness center or mental health
professionals if you have any concerns. The Los Angeles County
Office of Education has also compiled resources that can be
found here.

The City of Pasadena is mindful of the need to ensure that
residents should be able to call on essential City services
without fear arising from their identity or status. The City of
Pasadena adopted a policy in March 2017 that states that City
employees must maintain the confidentiality of resident’s personal
information (especially regarding immigration status, religion,
sexual orientation, and ethnicity), provide services without
discrimination, and are prohibited from assisting in federal
immigration enforcement unless legally required.

Our highest priority is the safety and well-being of students and
employees in our schools, our residents and neighbors, workers,
and visitors. We appreciate the respect, kindness, and sensitivity
that so many of you are demonstrating to help us maintain a
safe and supportive environment for children in our schools and
everyone in our community.

We encourage members of our community to reach out with any
concerns.
