VOLUME 9 NO. 1

“I THINK I CAN” - DID!

Sierra Madre Rose Float Association Wins For The 9th Time In The Last 10 Years!

Inside this week:

The Sierra Madre Rose Float Association has won 2015 Mayor’s Award with it’s 83rd entry, “I Think I Can”.

The award was presented for the “Most Outstanding City Entry - National or International”. It was designed
by Joanne G. Garcia, Nancie Filkins, and Justin Brandstater’.

Riding on the float were Sierra Madre Rose Princesses Rose Princesses Kayla Rice, Alexi Zate,
Britney Stone, and Kristine Kuhn. Ms. Rice is a junior at The Peace and Justice Academy, Ms.
Zate is senior at LaSalle, Ms. Stone senior at San Marino High School and Ms. Kuhn is a junior
at St. Lucy’s Priory High School. (Above right - MVNews Photo)

Congratulations and thanks are in order for all of the hard working volunteers who spent
countless hours painstakingly painting, gluing and placing millions of seeds and flowers on
the float. Preparations for the float began in early 2014.

Special congratulations and thanks go to veteran volunteers and SMRFA leaders Bonnie and
Dave Colcher, Kay and Dick Sappington, Barbie Bevington, Donna Sutcliff, Illona Linden,
and float drivers, Dave and LaDonna Gaydosh (Partial listing). Their help was especially
critical this year in helping the group carry on after the untimely death of longtime SMRFA
President Bob Young, The float was dedicated to Bob’s memory and the last car expressed
the sentiment of the SMRFA and the entire city of Sierra Madre, “Forever Young”. (right)

So what’s next for this award winning organization? Breaking down the train after a brief
stop in Kersting Court and beginning working on the 2016 entry.
