JOCKEYS BOW TO HOLY ANGELS, GARY STEVENS
WINS 1ST RACE BACK AND A LOT MORE!

By Joan Schmidt

Besides the great racing venues, Santa Anita Park
has recently had many fun events/activities.

First I must acknowledge their wonderful Media/
Press Group headed by Mike Willman and staff
members Ed Golden and Debbie Olsen. After
important races, press members receive great Benoit
photos, a recap of the race and quotes by the jockey,
trainer and owners. Other “Stable Notes” include
recent win stats of jockeys, trainers and owners, and
updates on jockeys, horses and happenings.

The first recent excitement was the 50th annual
Jockeys VS Holy Angels Basketball Game. The
profits go to the Permanently Disabled Jockey
Fund, Eye on Jacob Foundation and Holy Angels
Sports Program. The jockeys are coached by Kurt
Hoover. It was the first time I saw the Jockeys lose-
26-20, but their BASKETBALL STAR, Drayden Van
Dyke was out with an injury as was Rafael Bejarano.
EVERYONE else came: Kent Desormeaux (5 points),
son Josh (4), Corey Nakatani (4) Chester Bonnet (2),
Edwin Maldonado (2), Jamie Theriot (2)and Chantel
Sutherland(1). Not scoring were agent Nelson Arroyo,
Chad Lindsay, Mario Gutierrez, Gallyn Mitchell,
Tiago Periera, Flavien Prat, Joe Talamo, Victor
Espinosa, Tyler Baze, and Austin Solis. Thanks also to
legends Laffit Pincay, Jr., Gary Stevens, Mike Smith,
Kent Desormeaux and Alex Solis for signing posters!

Sadly, Santa Anita’s #1 fan Pat Morris was missing.
Ironically, that day she lost her valiant battle against
cancer. Everyone connected to Santa Anita loved her.
Sonia Pishehvar shared the beautiful bench tribute
this past weekend.

On a happier note, Gary Stevens, AGELESS
WONDER returned to Santa Anita, March 11th
and won on SHEHASTHERITESTUFF in the 8th
race-first race back after HIP REPLACEMENT!
(in his 50’s, Gary also returned after a KNEE
REPLACEMENT). THANKS to ZOE METZ for
great photo of win.

Congrats to jockey Stewart Elliot who won the
prestigious George Woolfe Award, which honors
riders whose careers and personal character earn
esteem for himself and the sport of racing. The
winner is selected by a nationwide vote of his peers.
Well deserved!

Everyone is getting ready for the Santa Anita
Derby, April 8th. Great horses also come from back
East. Please visit santanita.com for more information
about racing and upcoming events.

COMING TO CROWELL PUBLIC LIBRARY CLIMATE
CHANGE FOR FUTURE & PRESENT PRESIDENTS

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5TH, 7:00 P.M.

San Marino, CA, March 16,
2017 – Cal Tech’s Austin
Minnich will present a
fascinating program on
climate change and its
ramifications at Crowell
Public Library, Wednesday,
April 5th. Climate change
is often viewed through
the lens of complicated
changes in weather patterns
over the globe. However,
the fundamental cause of
climate change is simple
and can be understood by
everyone.

 In this talk, Minnich
will describe exactly
why climate change is
occurring and its effects
on our planet using basic
physical principles. In
particular, how the science
that enables us to drive
cars, use electric power,
and keep our food cold in refrigerators also governs
why extra carbon dioxide in our atmosphere must
result in excess heat trapped on Earth. Minnich will
show why common arguments that deny climate
change is occurring contradict the basic physics
underlying technology in our modern society.
Although the present situation is serious, huge gains
can be made in mitigating the effects of climate
change with existing technology while also positively
impacting the economy, air quality, and a host of
other factors. Acting
now to employ these
commercially available
technologies ensures
that our planet will be
preserved for our children
and grandchildren.

 Austin Minnich is an
Assistant Professor of
Mechanical Engineering
and Applied Physics at
the California Institute of
Technology. He received
his Bachelor’s degree
from UC Berkeley in
2006 and his PhD from
MIT in 2011, after which
he started his position at
Caltech. He is the recipient
of a 2013 NSF CAREER
Award and a 2015 ONR
Young Investigator Award.
Austin Minnich also runs
the minnichlab (http://
minnich.caltech.edu/
index.html ) which focuses on understanding and
engineering nanoscale heat transport for applications
in the energy field like thermoelectric waste heat
recovery.

Adults, STEM students and all curious non-
scientists will enjoy this free presentation. Light
refreshments will be served.
