Mosquito Awareness
in South Pasadena

Chu’s Statement on the
Passing of Hawaiian
Senator Daniel Akaka

SPARC Gallery Exhibition
by Artist Carolie Parker

The South Pasadena
Arts Council (SPARC)
is pleased to present the
exhibition Frame Story—
Carolie Parker at SPARC
Gallery, located at the
South Pasadena Chamber
of Commerce on Mission
Street. MICRONAUT, an
independent curatorial
design firm in South
Pasadena, has organized the
exhibition.

 Frame Story is named for
a traditional literary device
in which a group of related
stories are told within the
context of a larger story. This
format of a “story within a
story, first popularized in
the late Middle Ages, can
be seen in such collections
as Boccaccio’s Decameron,
Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales
and the ancient folktales
compiled in The 1001
Nights.

 The formal elements in
Carolie Parker’s works draw
a on similar regulating
principle: the repetition of
geometric shapes within a
layered format where motifs
reoccur in slight variations
through the series. An
exploration of translucent
color reflects the artist’s
interest in the Muslim tile
designs of Andalucia, which
in turn bear many similarities
to the reoccurring motifs in
works like The 1001 Nights.
“To make the paintings,”
Parker notes, “I work in
layers, starting with collaged
or recycled paper squeegeed
with color. The second layer
is a watercolor shape, which
is poured onto the surface.
Each piece is finished with
a patterned overlay, printed
either in silkscreen or with a
template.”

 The actual shapes of color
in Frame Story are suggested
by the commercial and
domestic architecture of
Los Angeles, which comes
in often predictable box-
like forms overlaid with a
range of decorative touches;
Mexican, Tuscan, Norman
or Tudor. Parker transform
this vernacular into images
of great formal elegance in
the same way that stories
like The 1001 Nights draw
on inherited folk traditions,
weaving them into luminous
tales of magical change and
adventure.

 Carolie Parker is a visual
artist and writer with a
background in foreign
languages and world
literature. She was recently
a MacDowell Fellow
(visual art and poetry)
and a Visiting Artist at
the American Academy
in Rome. Her poetry has
appeared in Trickhouse,
The Denver Quarterly,
NOW culture, River Styx
Magazine and Poor Claudia.
She has exhibited visual
work at PØST, The Armory
Center for the Arts, BLAM
and Edward Cella Art
and Architecture (all Los
Angeles). Mirage Industry, a
book-length collection of her
poetry, is just out from What
Books Press in Los Angeles.
She teaches Humanities and
Art History at LA Trade Tech
(LA Community College
District).

 The SPARC Gallery is
located at 1121 Mission
Street, SPARC Gallery
Hours are Tuesday –
Friday 10am - 5 pm or by
appointment. Please call
the Chamber office before
arriving. 626-441-2339.

 The City of South Pasadena
is proud to join the State of
California and the San Gabriel
Valley Mosquito & Vector
Control District in raising
awareness about the most
deadliest creature on this
planet: The mosquito. South
Pasadena citizens should take
the time to prepare their home
for a potentially busy mosquito
and virus summer. Last year,
mosquito bites made hundreds
of people in L.A. County sick.
It is up to each resident and
business owner to do their
part to make their property
mosquito-free.

Here are three simple habits
you can start today:

Tip ‘n Toss, Show them Who’s
Boss - Toss out any stagnant
water around the home weekly.
Mosquitoes use your blood to
lay her eggs on stagnant water.
Stagnant water can be found
in small containers such as
buckets, old tires, and plant
saucers. Mosquitoes will also
use swimming pools if the
water isn’t pumping or if the
pool has chlorine in it.

 Going outside? Use insect
repellent - People who want
to avoid those embarrassing
mosquito bites should keep
a can of repellent next to the
door. Mosquitoes can bite
anytime during the day and
at dawn and dusk. Look for
ingredients that have been
proven effective: Picaridin, Oil
of lemon eucalyptus, DEET, or
IR3535. You only need one of
these ingredients in the bottle.

 Screen them out - Mosquitoes
and flies can enter your home
and make your life miserable.
Be sure to check your window
and door screens for any tears.
Repair them today so your
warmer days are not filled with
mosquito bites.

 These simple actions will
make you healthier and reduce
your risk of getting sick from a
mosquito-transmitted disease.

Artist Reception –
Tonight, 6:00-8:00 pm

Congressional Asian Pacific
American Caucus Chair
Rep. Judy Chu released the
following statement earlier
this month on the passing of
U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka.
Senator Akaka was the first
Native Hawaiian ever elected
to the U.S. Senate and retired
in 2012 after serving a total of
36 years in the U.S. Congress.
He passed away in Hawaii
April 6 at the age of 93.

 “I am deeply saddened by
the passing of my former
colleague, Senator Daniel
K. Akaka. As the first Native
Hawaiian elected to the U.S.
Senate and a founding member
of the Congressional Asian
Pacific American Caucus, he
was a tremendous leader for
both the people of Hawaii and
the broader Asian American,
Native Hawaiian and Pacific
Islander community.

 “Throughout his 36 years in
Congress, he fought tirelessly
to secure funding and parity
for the Native Hawaiian
people and successfully
passed an apology resolution
to acknowledge the U.S.
government’s role in the illegal
overthrow of the Kingdom
of Hawaii. As a World War II
veteran, he also cared deeply
about our nation’s military
service members and veterans.
During his tenure as chairman
of the Senate Veterans Affairs
Committee, he led notable
efforts to secure benefits for
Filipino veterans who served
alongside American forces
during World War II as well as
Vietnam War veterans exposed
to Agent Orange.

“His legacy of aloha will be
remembered not only in the
loving family he leaves behind,
but also in his lifelong service
to his beloved home state of
Hawaii and the American
people. My thoughts are with
his wife, Millie, his family, and
the people of Hawaii during
this difficult time.”
