(top right). “The Grand Marshal is a person or persons whose efforts over a long period of time have been beneficial to the community of Sierra Madre. The title of Grand Marshal is intended to honor a person or persons’ volume of work, dedication and overall enhancements to our community.” Laura or Ms. Palmer (above) known by her students and former student alike, is a lifelong resident of Sierra Madre who has always chosen to better her community in many ways. She is an exemplary 4th grade teacher at Sierra Madre Elementary School (2016 Pasadena Teacher of the Year and LA County Teacher of the Year)! Her passion toward education and her students is outstanding! Her commitment to the young citizens of Sierra Madre is reflected in not only their love of being in her class, but how many continue to keep in touch after leaving SMES. She always brought that local “355” vibe to her classroom. Laura’s deep commitment and love of her town is also shown in her volunteer activities. She is a member of the Sierra Madre Library Board of Trustees and serves on the Sierra Madre Community Foundation Board of Directors as its Recording Secretary. The Sierra Madre 4th of July festivities have always been Laura’s favorite holiday. The Committee couldn’t think of a more special and appropriate way to honor her commitment to Sierra Madre and being an AWESOME local teacher, by being this year’s 4th of July Parade’s Grand Marshal!! Additionally, the Committee is proud and honored to announce that Mike Amerio and the Doug & Heather Parker (above) have been selected as “Hometown Heroes”, aka Mr. and Mrs. Sierra Madre in their own right. For the past 23 years, Doug & his wife Heather Parker (pictured below) hav been planting and growing Atlantic Giant and Big Max pumpkins in their backyard on East Alegria Avenue, all for Halloween Week, during which he carves and builds unique beautiful pumpkin structures for the community to come enjoy on Halloween night. Each year, thousands of visitors come to Sierra Madre just to visit this street and admire the creations. They even welcome visitor onto their property to watch as he carves and builds during the week, and the pumpkins are always lit for visitors the night after Halloween as well. Over the years, the Pasadena Star News and the Mountain Views News have featured articles on his work, and KCAL/KCBS carried segments on Parker and his Pumpkins in 2010 and 2014. It’s been a long, wonderful, happy adventure with Parker’s Pumpkins and this beloved hometown, and this is why we are honored to thank them for their extra special piece of local joy as the 2023 Hometown Hero. Did you know the City has an elected City Treasurer and that the position is strictly volunteer? Yep that’s right and his name is Mike Amerio. He has gone above and beyond looking out for the community and City of Sierra Madre. Mike’s immense dedication over the greater part of ten years as City treasurer is remarkable as he watches over the finances of the City. But his volunteering didn’t start there, Mike who has always supported local businesses also spent many years on the field of Heasley and Dapper volunteering with Little League and Pony as his boys grew up in town. Mike and his wife Cynthia have raised 3 boys in Sierra Madre over the course of their 20 years here. They have also been very active at St. Rita’s School & Parish. Mike’s dedication to public service volunteering certainly make him a Sierra Madre treasure and we are happy to thank him for his service recognizing him as a Sierra Madre Hometown Hero 2023!
