HUDDLE UP
With HARVEY HYDE
LET'S HUDDLE UP IN
2024!
There are those who have said that sports are a valuable life-
learning tool. I do believe this myself. One learns discipline,
how to follow rules; the importance of playing a role;
understanding about working hard; winning a few and losing
a few; taking responsibility; making connections with others
and perhaps finding a life-long friend.
During this 2023 sports year I have looked back on some of my own experiences and shared
some of my thoughts about coaching, sports and athletics. In my coaching life, some
games we won, and some we lost. For myself I remember all the fumbles and interceptions
and missed scoring opportunities. It’s funny how you remember the dropped passes, the
penalties, the poor decisions in play calling. Others may remember the wins and great plays.
I can relate and compare much of these football memories to family and life decisions. I
can blame some of these sticky situations on the “no huddle” philosophy. Get up fast to
the line of scrimmage, look around and call a new play. Problem in football -- everyone
doesn't hear the call, or understand it or may not know his assignment. It takes all eleven
positions in football; five in basketball and however many people you depend upon in your
family or company or to make that winning play. Family matters and decisions can be as
significant as a football play called from the line of scrimmage or called after a bit of time
in the huddle together.
Everyone is trying to “win” today. In work, in sports, in family groups, in companies, in
committees. I think in 2024 we should be encouraging more communication on all levels.
Everyone should care. Family members, team members, work colleagues. To be a part of
many groups, we have to prove we are really committed. That we really wanted it.
In football days past, we had to cut our hair, wear the correct uniform, take off the earrings
and nose rings, and line up for the team picture looking the same. We are all equal. We had
to prove we were willing to pay a small price, and we were mostly proud to be recognized
for it.
In 2024 I would like to see more huddles, more meetings, where everyone understands the
play and the assignment, and all hear the same thing. Where more are willing to make the
sacrifice to be successful. Where we have made a game plan for everyday with a list of what
needs to get done. And at the end of the day we go through the list and see what has been
accomplished.
Was it a winning day? Remember, “game day is every day.” In 2024 let’s all communicate
to compete. This may not come easy. Don’t expect it to. But it can be more rewarding if we
have shared that huddle!
I’m fired up for 2024! Huddle up! Let’s have a winning season together!
