“We’re havin’ a heatwave, a tropical heatwave...” I was going to pose the 
questions as to who sang it first, who made it more famous the second 
time, in what movies, and who wrote it, but all you have to do these days 
is look it up on the internet - way too easy! For those of you who do, check

give away the answers though... you never know when QuizMistress

BARGAIN BOOK SALE 

AT SIERRA MADRE LIBRARY

The Friends of the Sierra Madre Library will hold a Bargain 
Book Table Sale inside the Library, Monday, October 18 through 
Saturday, October 23, during the Library’s open hours. This 
month’s featured topics are Sports, Fiction, Art, Biographies, 
Specialty and Children’s books. Books are replenished daily, and 
are only $1.00 each.

Alverno’s Festival of Haunts 

is October 30!

 Come as you aren’t to Alverno High School’s Festival of Haunts 
on Saturday, October 30 from 4-7 p.m. Alverno’s freshman class 
sponsors dress-up fun and games on the first floor, while older kids 
can explore the creeeepy attic, with thrills and chills caused by the 
sophomore class.

 Don’t miss this opportunity for Halloween fun at 
Alverno High School’s Villa del Sol’ d Oro, 200 
N. Michillinda in Sierra Madre. Admission is $2 for kids aged 
1 to 9, $3 for kids aged10 to 99. Anyone older than 99 gets in free!

 The cast for the Sierra Madre Playhouse production of

 Sierra Madre Playhouse had found a comfortable niche, 
presenting mid-century American and British classics. In 
its new period of growth, it plans to expand its audience 
by presenting more challenging contemporary works. That 
includes “Anna in the Tropics,” one of the new centiury’s 
best plays.

Three-time Academy Award winner Harry Warren 
got his musical start in Tin Pan Alley in the early 
1900s. Julia Riva, Harry’s granddaughter, wrote and 
stars in this memoir of those early days. Join Harry, 
Julia, and the Theatres of Vision Gang as they sing and 
dance some of Harry’s Tin Pan Alley hits like “I Found 
a Million Dollar Baby,” “You’re My Everything,” “This 
Heart of Mine,” and many, many more.


“ THE WIZARD OF OZ” AT SIERRA MADRE 
PLAYHOUSE ; BACK BY POPULAR 
DEMAND THROUGH NOVEMBER 13 

 Join Dorothy, Toto and all of their new found friends in this lively, 
colorful, magical musical adventure based on L. Frank Baum’s much 
loved story. The interactive show permits the kids in the audience to be 
Munchkins, stuff the scarecrow, oil the tin woodman, play poppies in the 
field and hide Dorothy from the wicked witch. 

 The yellow brick road through the audience is much traveled by 
Dorothy and her friends on their adventure-filled journey to the magical 
land of Oz. 

 June Chandler, long associated with Sierra Madre Playhouse, directs a 
cast that includes Steve Cipriani, Guy Crawford, Dan Ellis, Ron Johnston, 
Donna Ieraci, Shirley McConnell, Bruce Nehlsen and Lynda Rohrbacher. 

 Written by Steve and Kathy Hotchner. Presented by June Chandler’s 
Fairy Tale Theatre. Produced by special arrangement with Dramatic 
Publishing Company.

FUMC VARIETY HOUR

 On Saturday, November 6th at 7pm, First United 
Methodist Church of Pasadena presents the "FUMC 
Variety Hour." 

 The public is invited to come see the entertaining talents 
of members of the church and also support the "Friends in 
Deed's" food pantry. A pre-show dinner is also available 
to those that purchase tickets in advance, but, to see the 
show there is merely a suggested donation of canned 
goods which will go directly to "Friends in Deeds".

a.m., following church services, 
for the church’s annual Halloween 
Chili and Mummy Dog Brunch. 

In addition to preparing the chili 
‘n’ dogs and sweet treats, Adult 
and Family Ministries will be 
providing materials for children to 
make one-of-a kind canvas trick or 
treat bags. There is no age restriction, and all are welcome 
at this family-friendly event.

The Sierra Madre UMC is located at 695 W. Sierra 
Madre Blvd. in Sierra Madre, on the northeast corner of
