by his loving family.

Grippi at the family home
on North Mountain
Trail, Joe lived most of
his life in Sierra Madre.
He was the first child to
be baptized in St. Rita’s
RCC on North Baldwin
Avenue.
After graduating from John Muir High School in 1942,

South Pacific, and training gunners at the Navy center in
Dahlgren, VA. After an honorable discharge in 1946, he

life, serving for nine years as chairman of the City’s Parks
and Recreation Commission, and playing an integral role
in the development of the Recreation Center at Sierra Vista
Park, Dapper Field, and a Bailey Canyon Wilderness Park
protected area. Joe was also a longtime member of the
Sierra Madre Kiwanis Club, serving as president in 1964.
Many will remember Joe as a lifelong baseball player and
ardent fan. His love of the game led him to serve as a youth
baseball coach throughout the 1960s and 70s.
After retiring from the LA times, Joe enjoyed reading,
gardening, cooking, traveling, concert-going, and attending
UCLA football and Dodger baseball games.
Joe was preceded in death by sisters Margie and Annie, and

years, Barbara; daughters Linda Grippi, Margie Lorusso,
