Sierra Madrean Djibril N'Doye hosted
a "Signing Ceremony" at his home

upcoming exhibit in Beverly Hills at
the annual outdoor art festival called
"Affaire in the Gardens", to be held
October 16-17th, in the Beverly Gardens

the original to the Friends of the Library.

REMEMBRANCE

JOE GRIPPI - 1925-2010

Joe Grippi, 85, passed
away peacefully at his
home in Sierra Madre on
October 7, surrounded
by his loving family.

Born on July 10, 1925,
to Cosma and Joseph
Grippi at the family home
on North Mountain
Trail, Joe lived most of
his life in Sierra Madre.
He was the first child to
be baptized in St. Rita’s
RCC on North Baldwin
Avenue.

After graduating from John Muir High School in 1942,
Joe enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on a destroyer in the
South Pacific, and training gunners at the Navy center in
Dahlgren, VA. After an honorable discharge in 1946, he
returned to Sierra Madre to raise a family.

Joe worked for the U.S. Post Office before establishing a
career as a local independent distributor of the LA Times.
He was deeply committed to his hometown throughout his
life, serving for nine years as chairman of the City’s Parks
and Recreation Commission, and playing an integral role
in the development of the Recreation Center at Sierra Vista
Park, Dapper Field, and a Bailey Canyon Wilderness Park
protected area. Joe was also a longtime member of the
Sierra Madre Kiwanis Club, serving as president in 1964.

Many will remember Joe as a lifelong baseball player and
ardent fan. His love of the game led him to serve as a youth
baseball coach throughout the 1960s and 70s.

After retiring from the LA times, Joe enjoyed reading,
gardening, cooking, traveling, concert-going, and attending
UCLA football and Dodger baseball games.

Joe was preceded in death by sisters Margie and Annie, and
brothers Joseph and John. He is survived by his wife of 32
years, Barbara; daughters Linda Grippi, Margie Lorusso,
Beth Brady, and son Vince Grippi; seven grandchildren;
and brother David Groth.

A High Mass Funeral was held on October 13 at the Church
of the Ascension in Sierra Madre, followed by internment
at Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetery. Memorial donations
may be made to the Church of the Ascension, 25 E. Laurel
Ave., Sierra Madre, CA, 91024, in care of the Very Reverend
Michael Bamberger, to honor Rev. Bamberger’s longtime
service to the residents of Sierra Madre.

Attending the ‘signing’ are, (l to r): Hortense Scott, Djibril N’Doye, Moira Love,
Tom Love, and CCH Pounder.
