KAISER FUNDS
PUSD CAMPUS
HEALTH CENTERS

Kaiser Permanente, through
its Community Benefit Grants
Program, has provided $25,000
for nurse practitioners in
the Pasadena Unified School
District (PUSD).

 “The PUSD Student Health
Services Project is one that has
demonstrated positive results
for our students and their
families,” says Joan Fauvre,
PEF’s executive director.
“Kaiser’s donation will help
to make sure that school
nurses are available to provide
services at the most in-need
school campuses that include
Cleveland, Jackson, Madison,
Loma Alta, and Rose City.”

 The Student Health Services
Project is a comprehensive
school-based health program
that has been developed by
the PUSD over the last fifteen
years. Through the program
students and their families
receive, free of charge, services
that include comprehensive
health and social services,
linkages and referrals to other
agencies, counseling, parent
education and support groups,
crisis intervention, and case
management. The Family
Centers work collaboratively
with more than 45 local
agencies in this project to help
create healthy communities.

Dozens of The Gooden School students’ dogs, cats, gerbils,
snakes and yes, even a horse, were blessed on Thursday,
October 14. Chaplain Michael Cooper blessed live animals,
photos of favorite pets living and deceased and even pet
stuffed animals as part of a celebration of the feast day of
St. Francis, patron saint of animals. For more information,

 Alverno is an independent college-prep
Catholic high school that for 50 years has
been changing girls into young women who
know themselves, who know where they are
going and how to get there. We are strong
believers in who you are and what you want
to accomplish, to be exactly the person you
want to be.

Of course, college is part of what you see
in your future. We’re proud to announce
that 100% of the Class of 2010 will attend
college this fall, which is typical for Alverno
graduates. “Before I came to Alverno I never
imagined that I would be 8 for 8 in college
admissions,” says Shelby Mitchell, Class of
2010. “I had so many choices, as well as the
confidence to make the right decision.”

Melody Bueno says she was terribly shy
when she entered 9th grade. “Alverno has
empowered me to put myself forward, to
take risks, to become the confident woman
I never dreamed I could be,” says the
2010 Valedictorian. “I go into the future
academically ready, with solid values and
friends I’ll have for life.”

You’ll have the chance to build your
leadership skills through our exciting school
government program, which is modeled on
the way the U.S. and California governments
work. “About a third of the student body
is involved in some aspect of leadership,”
says Ann Gillick, Alverno’s Head of School.
“There are so many opportunities that
there’s a niche for just about everyone.”

As well as fine academic and leadership
programs, Alverno offers a strong service
program which involves the entire school
in helping others. As evidence of our
continuing commitment to service, twenty-
one girls were recognized for having given
more than 420 hours of service to others,
and overall, our students performed more
than 18,000 hours of service as a school.

Are you an athlete? Our Jaguars are Horizon
League champions in five out of six sports.
Artists in our graduating class were accepted
to such esteemed art colleges as the Rhode
Island School of Design, Art Institute of San
Francisco, the School of Visual Arts in New
York, and the Los Angeles Film School.

“We believe that the best way for girls to
find out who
they are is to
give them the
opportunity to
try new things,”
says Gillick.
“High school is
a chance for girls
to find out what
they’re good at
and what they
love to do. At
Alverno, girls see
their horizons
grow.”

Learn more
about how
Alverno can
help you become
exactly the
person you
want to be at
our upcoming
open house on
November 21, 2010 from 1-3:30 pm. Our
HSPT entrance exam dates are January 22
and February 5.. To register for invitations
to open house or special visiting days, please
contact Admissions Director Candace
Siegle at admissions@alverno-hs.org.

Nestled on a 13 acre campus in the foothills
of Sierra Madre, Alverno High School is a
highly regarded independent, Catholic high
school for girls. Its college-prep curriculum
and emphasis on leadership attracts
students from public and private schools
throughout the San Gabriel Valley. #####
