Alverno X-Country Falls to San
Gabriel Mission By Story and Photo by Lara L. Larramendi

Despite a blistering first place finish by sophomore Eryn Blakely (19:03) and a
solid 2nd place finish by senior Audrey Davy (21:51), the Jaguars Varsity cross-country
team lost to San Gabriel Mission 28-60 at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl course. San Gabriel
Mission’s top 5 runners finished 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th and 8th. The remainder of Alverno’s top
5 runners finished 16th (frosh Jessica Lopez), 20th (sophomore Ashley Haylett) and 21st
(frosh Francesca Rueda).

Blakely, who has been dominating the Horizon League competition since her
freshman year, improved on her winning time (20:12) of two weeks ago in League
competition against Holy Family at the 3-mile Rose Bowl course by 1:09.

Rounding out the Jaguars Varsity runners were sophomore Adrianna Martinez,
seniors Miranda Akkari, Bianca Melkonian, Sahhara Assafiri and frosh Bella Daniels-
Campos. Almost all of the varsity runners significantly improved on their finishing
times from two weeks ago at this same 3-mile Rose Bowl course.

The Junior Varsity runners fared better than their Varsity sisters, but still fell
short to San Gabriel Mission, 32-52. Frosh Reagan Dowd bested her finish time of
two weeks ago by 3:20. Her JV teammates also improved on their finish times; juniors
Holly Coates (1:29), Andrea Gochez-Wilson (2:21), Madi Daniels-Campos (1:37),
soph Nicolette Rodriguez (2:19) and frosh Victoria Pintado (1:46).

Alverno will host the next Horizon League meet on Wednesday October 20th
@ 4:00 P.M. at Eaton Canyon, the Jaguars “home” course. To date, the school that
has hosted the League meet has won the team competition. Come out and cheer the
Jaguars to victory.

PUSHING YOUR IRONS TO THE RIGHT

I am going to be straight with
you, pushing your iron shots
to the right is a pretty tough
mistake to fix. Allow me to
explain myself. The golf ball
sits on the ground and with
the technology that has come
along in the past 20 years,
the superintendents can mow
the fairways closer than the
putting greens I grew up on.

What does that have to do
with missing irons shots to the right? For those of you that
struggle with this mistake, the golf club swings too much
from the inside to the outside in the downswing. When the
golf club swings in that direction the club BOTTOMS out
behind the golf ball. The direction the club is swinging in
the downswing is to the right of the green.

Oh, there is one more challenge. When the golf club swings
too much from inside to outside, the bottom of the arc
reaches the ground behind the golf ball and then it begins to
swing back up. You never really find the bottom of the ball.
You will either top it or hit it real thin. Y es, you add insult
to injury. Not only does it go right but it goes short-right.

Of course there are a number of ways to correct it, but I am
going to give you something to work on and I know it will
help. After you aim correctly (not left) I want you to look at
the bunker or edge of the LEFT side of the green. Not the
middle of the green, not the pin but the left of the green.

Now you are aiming at the center of the green but you are
LOOKING a little bit left of the green. I want you to make
sure you swing to the left side of the green in the downswing.
Not a lot of thought just think left. This is huge: DON'T
HOOK IT LEFT, but simply swing and turn through to the
left.

If you are done with hitting iron shots that wind up right of
the green, then head on over to a new site that will help you
correct this mistake IGOLFFIXES.com, and do it today!!!

Golfingly yours, Bobby Eldridge

Take Your Best “Shot” -

Land A Spot In The Pro Football Hall Of Fame

(NAPSI)-As children across America put on
their helmets and pads and take to the gridiron
to play football, parents will fill the stands,
cameras in hand, hoping to capture priceless
moments in their children’s lives. One will also
capture first prize in a football photography
contest.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is looking for
the best youth football photos from across
America. Football fans are encouraged to pick
up a camera and enter the sixth annual “Why
Do You Love Football?” Photo Challenge.
The image of a child’s first time taking the
field to a player making a leaping catch to a
cheerleader rooting for the home team could
earn the winning photographer a trip to
attend Super Bowl XLV in North Texas. In
addition, the winner will receive a trip to the
2011 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement
Celebration and have his or her photo displayed
in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for a year.

A judging panel consisting of Archie
Manning, former NFL quarterback and father
of two Super Bowl MVP quarterbacks; Peter
Read Miller, Sports Illustrated photographer;
and other prominent staff photographers
and photo editors will determine the group
of 14 finalists in each division. Once the field
is narrowed, fans will make the final call by
voting for their favorite photo from December
20, 2010, through January 7, 2011, via the
contest website.

“Year after year I look forward to seeing how
fans portray their passion for the game of
football through their photography,” said Manning. “Each
year the photos entered in the contest get better and better
and I am looking forward to see what this year’s will produce.”

Making photography part of your day-to-day routine lets you
capture memories that last a lifetime. Here are some sports
photography hints that may help:

• Get to the game early so you can find the best place from
which to take your pictures.

• Get panning down pat. When you move the camera in the
same direction as the action, you get the subject in sharp
focus and the background blurred.

• Vary your shutter speeds. Very fast shutter speed will get a
stop action look. Slow shutter speeds will give the picture the
appearance of motion.

• Prefocus your camera so you can get the shot as it happens,
unless your camera has a “quick release” setting.

• Try to stay steady. Use a tripod or other sort of support to
keep camera from shaking.

• Vary the angle at which you take the picture.

• Enter the contest. You can submit as many as 10 images
each from September 2, 2010, to December 1, 2010, by visiting
Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, at www.usa.
canon.com/nfl and following the online instructions.
