ST. RITA ALUM CHOSEN FOR US ARMY
ALL-AMERICAN BOWL
Hayden Rettig to Join
Elite All-Americans in
January’s Game
St. Rita alum and Cathedral
High School senior, Hayden
Rettig, has been selected to
play in the prestigious US
Army All-American Bowl
in 2013. Rettig will join the
nation’s top 90 high school
football players in the
East vs. West game at the
Alamodome in San Antonio,
Texas on Saturday, Jan. 5.
“It’s a great honor playing
in this game,” Rettig said.
“These men [US Army] work
so hard every day to provide
for us and protect us…I can’t
wait to show them that I can
be one of their country’s
great quarterbacks.”
In January, Rettig will be
heading off to college-football powerhouse Louisiana State University (LSU), where he is
committed to playing quarterback. His family is no stranger to football talent. Hayden’s
older brother, Chase, is the starting quarterback for Boston College and one of the leading
passers in the ACC.
The brothers both graduated from St. Rita, a place still close to their hearts, where Hayden
said he developed a love of the game while playing under Coach Randy Davies. “He was a
great coach and he always got the most out of us,” Hayden Rettig said. “He personally gave
me the confidence to strive to be the best I could be. I will always treasure the years I played
at St Rita and for Coach Davies.”
Both Hayden and Chase still keep
in contact with Davies and come
back to school to visit their old
teachers and favorite office ladies
whenever they get the chance.
Cousins CJ in sixth grade and
Holly in kindergarten attend St.
Rita as well.
Watch for Rettig and root for the
West Coast on January 5. The
All-American game, in its 13th
year, will be broadcast live on
NBC, with an expected crowd of
40,000 in attendance. Known as
the nation’s premiere high school
football game, it has been called
a “launching pad” for future NFL
and collegiate star football players.
“Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow,
Sean Jackson…all these guys
have played in the All-American
game, “Rettig said. “They say 175
are active in the NFL. That’s a big
number for me…I want to be
there someday.”

SIERRA MADRE OKTOBERFEST FULL
OF FUN AND SURPRISES
Sierra Madre
had a real Oktober
surprise
at its 5th Annual
Oktoberfest
Golf and Tennis
Tournament.
The event
raises funds
for the city’s
youth program
and included
a Four Ball
Scramble Golf
Tournament
and Round
Robin Tennis
Tournament.
In recent
years the Tennis
Tournament
has been dominated
by women
players and
the golf by men,
however this
year the tables
turned.
Men captured all three places in the tennis tournament and a Team of 3 women and 1 man won the
golf tournament.
Tennis Winners for 2012 were:
1st place – Ray Tyndall
2nd place – John Capoccia
3rd place – Rick Sosapovan
Golf Team Winners:
Susan Henderson, Hattie Harris, Donna Burley, and Ray Burley
In addition to the golf tournament prizes were given for the Putting Contest - Marc Van Cleave, Longest
Drive - Tully Rankin and Closest To The Pin, Pat Simcock.
An annual side competition between two local businesses, GEM Plumbing and the Mountain Views
News is also played annually. For the previous two years GEM has won the competition and the losing
team has to purchase the pumpkins for the city’s Halloween activities in the name of the Sierra
Madre Kiwanis Club. This year however, the Mountain Views Team had an incredible round and
finished the tournament -8 with 3 mulligans to spare.
The games were followed by a delicious lunch catered by Matt Denny’s, a variety of traditional Oktoberfest
beer, a silent auction, raffles and just plain fun.
