ALVERNO HIGH SCHOOL
HOSTS SUCCESSFUL
HOLIDAY BLOOD DRIVE
FOR CITY OF HOPE
On Friday, December 14, Alverno High School hosted a Holiday
Blood Drive with City of Hope to benefit their patients—most of
whom are fighting cancer.
For many Alverno students, Friday was the first time that they
give blood and while it was a daunting process for some of
them—they were able to overcome their fears. At the end of the
day, the Alverno community contributed 24 pints of blood to
City of Hope. Since 1 pint of blood can save the lives of 3 people,
Alverno’s donation alone could prove to be life changing for
nearly 75 people.
“At Alverno, our Franciscan and Immaculate Heart roots place
an important emphasis on giving back to those in need,” said
Ann Gillick, Head of School. “City of Hope provides exceptional
care to thousands of patients fighting cancer every year and as
a community Alverno has been deeply affected by cancer. I am
proud to see so many of our young women make the decision to
give back to those who need it, especially during the Christmas
season. They are shining examples to all of us and truly exemplify
the Alverno philosophy and spirit.”
About Alverno High School
Alverno High School is a Catholic, private, college preparatory
school for young women dedicated to preparing them to function
in a society as informed, knowledgeable persons, who have the
requisite skills to make and implement mature decisions about
complex problems. Enlivened by the spirit of its Immaculate
Heart Community sponsors, and mindful of the Franciscan
roots of its founders, Alverno’s program—academic, spiritual,
aesthetic, social, and physical—is shaped by the staff, trustees,
and students in light of the world for which the students are being
educated. Alverno’s mission is to empower each young woman
to be exactly the person she wants to be and since 1960, Alverno
has empowered more than 4,100 women to meet that goal. For

I have seen many,
many Cirque shows.
All are amazing and,
while only the story
is new, ‘Worlds Away’
is an amazing feat of
filmmaking and flaunts
its stunning 3D, which
James Cameron did a
fantastic job with.
Mia (Erica Kathleen
Linz) stumbles upon an
old circus. She wanders
around, seeing the
many wonderful
sights, until a clown
gives her a flyer for a
mysterious man called
the Aerialist (Igor
Zaripov). When the
two see each other,
they instantly connect.
However, this causes
the Aerialist to miss his
trapeze, and he falls to
through the ground,
with Mia following
him. They find themselves in a whole other world, and go on a
quest to find each other.
‘Worlds Away’ is like a wonderful dream: you feel like
you disappear into the world that has been created. And, like all
other dreams, it must be seen to be believed.

SIERRA MADRE LIBRARY ANNOUNCES:
Picture Book Apps for iPad (Library)
How does a good parent sort out the good and the bad, the useful
and harmful for their children in today’s electronic world? The
Sierra Madre Public Library has an app for that! Several, actually.
Parents of young children are invited to Apps for Toddlers on
Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. This workshop will cover
how to get children’s apps on iPads, will look at different picture
book iPad apps, will review sites that review apps, and look at
how iPads support early literacy.
Children are welcome to accompany their parents and play
in the Children’s Room but the workshop itself is designed for
grown-ups.
For more information, contact the Sierra Madre Public Library,
