PASADENA UNIFIED PRESENTS READY.
SET. KINDERGARTEN! TO PREPARE THE
PARENTS OF ITS NEWEST STUDENTS

Pasadena, CA --- Continuing its spring series of parent education
seminars, the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) presents
Ready. Set. Kindergarten!, an informative and interactive session
to help parents of entering kindergartners prepare for the 20142015
school year. Presented by PUSD early childhood education
teachers, the seminars include information on how to prepare
young students for the first day of kindergarten, an introduction
to the kindergarten curriculum, and fun, interactive learning activities
for families.

To be eligible for kindergarten in PUSD, a child must turn five
years old by Sept. 1, 2014. Transitional kindergarten is also offered
for children who turn five between September 2, 2014 and
December 2, 2014, providing age appropriate instruction to students
born later in the year before they progress to a traditional
kindergarten class.

Parents and guardians can begin registering incoming kindergarten
students by visiting their local PUSD campus starting in
March. To locate a neighborhood school, visit gopusd.com/locator.
A parent/guardian must provide a copy of the child’s birth
certificate, immunization records, proof of rent or home ownership
within PUSD’s boundaries and a recent utility bill in the parent/
guardian’s name to register a child for kindergarten.

The Ready. Set. Kindergarten! Parent education seminars are
sponsored by PUSD’s Family Resource Center, which supports
parents, teachers and staff in building partnerships for student
achievement in partnership with the district’s Coordinated Early
Intervention Services program. For more information and for
other parent education opportunities, visit www.parent-center.

REP. SCHIFF ANNOUNCES FIRST
ANNUAL CONGRESSIONAL STUDENT
STEM CHALLENGE – STUDENTS TO
BUILD APP

Burbank, CA –Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) announced
the launch the first annual congressional science, technology, engineering
and math (STEM) academic competition, the House
Student App Challenge, for the 28th Congressional District. The
theme for the first year of the competition is Computer Science,
challenging students to develop an application (“app”).

Established by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, this
competition is part of a nationwide event that invites high school
students from all congressional districts to compete by creating
and exhibiting their software application, or “app,” for mobile,
tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. It is designed
to promote innovation and engagement in the STEM education
fields. Throughout the competition period, participating
students will be provided opportunities to engage with various
STEM educational partners, tech entrepreneurs, and tech experts
located in the District to mentor and assist them with their app
development.

“This challenge is an extraordinary opportunity for students to
put their technical skills to the test and try something different,”
said Schiff. “In the next decade, the U.S. economy is expected to
add over 8 million new STEM jobs, but face a shortage of graduates
trained in those fields. This contest will help address that challenge
by encouraging students to create their own app and pursue
an education and career in STEM fields. Hopefully, we find some
wonderful entrepreneurs and inventors in our community!”

The House Student STEM Challenge is open to all high school
students who live in or attend high school in the 28th Congressional
District. Students entering the competition must provide a
YouTube or VIMEO video demo explaining their app and what
they learned through the competition process during the competition
submission period between February 1, 2014 and April
30, 2014.

More details on submitting a contest entry, the rules of the competition,
and helpful programming resources can be found here
on Rep. Schiff ’s website or at http://studentappchallenge.house.

THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show
THE LEGO MOVIE

Remembering back to
when the first teaser trailer came
out, everyone I talked to thoughtthis movie was a joke. It was believed
to be an emotionless, boring,
hour and a half commercialfor a toy company. I, however,
thought the exact opposite. I have

ite movies of all time and I wish I
could write more. If I did, though,
it would spoil the twist that WarnerBrothers worked so hard to keep asecret. Usually for these kinds ofmovies, the trailers give everythingabout the plot and characters awayand when you actually see the film,

been a huge fan of

it is completely

LEGO and what they

boring. That is not

stand for ever since I

the case with ‘The

was very young. And

LEGO Movie’. The

when I saw this movie,

other thing that

my extremely high ex-

sets this movie

pectations were met

apart is its ability to

and greatly surpassed.

actually make fun-

Emmett

ny jokes. With kid

(Chris Pratt) is just

humor, the jokes

your average, everyday

and make you roll

your eyes, and with

the city he lives in. He

wakes up, gets his coffee,
and ALWAYS follows the instructions.
However, after he meets
a mysterious stranger (Wyldstyle,
played by Elizabeth Banks), hemakes a discovery that will changethe universe: he discovers the longlost Piece of Resistance, the onlything capable of stopping the malicious
Lord Business (Will Ferrell)
and his army of robots.

This is one of my favor

ies, they are full of
innuendos. This movie is one, actually
funny, and two, very smartand appropriate for all ages.

There is so much more
that I could say about this movie,
its story, and its meaning but I
will stop here. ‘The LEGO Movie’
is something that everyone shouldexperience, and definitely in 3D.
And just remember that everything
is awesome!
