NASA Spacecraft DetectsImpact Glass on Mars

“Knowing that suchdeposits exist on theMartian surface today --
opens up a potential newstrategy in the search for
ancient Martian life.”

 NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance
Orbiter (MRO) has detected
deposits of glass within impact
craters on Mars scientists
announced Monday. Though
formed in the searing heat of a
violent impact, such deposits
might provide a delicate
window into the possibility of
past life on the Red Planet.

 During the past few years,
research has shown evidence
about past life has been
preserved in impact glass here
on Earth.

 Fellow Brown researchers
Kevin Cannon and Jack
Mustard, building on the
previous research, detail their
data about Martian impact glass
in a report now online in the

socially relevant. Participating
artists work alone or in teams.

artists who will create murals
depicting well known movies,
movie stars, epic scenes and
movie posters.

 At the festival’s conclusion,
participating artists will select
the outstanding murals from
among their peers. Awards
include 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place
Best of Show, Best Technique,
Best Use of Color, Best
Original Design, Rendering of a
Masterpiece, and more. Ballots
will be available on Sunday at
the information booth.

 Paseo Colorado welcomes the
Pasadena Chalk Festival over,
June 20th and 21st from 10 a.m.

- 7 p.m.
There will also be a Classic
Car Show on Sunday from
10:00am to 3:00pm adjacent to
the Festival (on Green Street),
featuring vintage, tricked-out
and fun cars of all makes and
styles.

journal Geology.

“The work done by Pete and
others showed us that glasses
are potentially important for
preserving biosignatures,”
Cannon said. “Knowing that,
we wanted to go look for them
on Mars and that’s what we did
here. Before this paper, no one
had been able to definitively
detect them on the surface.”

 Cannon and Mustard showed
large glass deposits are present
in several ancient, yet well-
preserved, craters on Mars.

 Knowing that impact glass can
preserve ancient signs of life
-- and now knowing that such
deposits exist on the Martian
surface today -- opens up a
potential new strategy in the
search for ancient Martian life.

 “This significant new detection
of impact glass illustrates how
we can continue to learn from
the ongoing observations
by this long-lived mission,”
said Richard Zurek, MRO
project scientist at NASA’s Jet
Propulsion Laboratory.

The Rialto was red tagged and

Retardant to
Be SprayedAround
Rose Bowl

 Brush areas surrounding
the Rose Bowl Stadium
will be treated with a clear,
wildland fire retardant
on Tuesday, starting at

9:00 a.m. and continuing
until early afternoon. This
year the application will
take place earlier in the
month due to the extreme
drought conditions and the
retardant will adhere until a
significant rainfall.
The Pasadena Fire
Department will take this
proactive approach to
diminish potential hazards
during the Fourth of July
holiday.

Fire retardant is one of the
main tools firefighters use
as a preventive measure and
to contain fires in untreated
areas.

 Phos-Chek helps keep
trees and grassland
from burning. Its main
ingredients are phosphates
and fertilizers that prevent
the ignition of fire and assist
in regrowth of areas after a
fire has been extinguished.
It is not harmful to pets.
