SIERRA MADRE EDITION SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2017 VOLUME 11 NO. 43 HAPPY HALLOWEEN SIERRA MADRE COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM ADDS 30 NEW MEMBERS The Sierra Madre CommunityEmergency Response Team (CERT) graduated 30 new members this week from their CERT Basic Training class. Thetraining, which took place overtwo Saturdays and three nights, isa 25 hour FEMA certified course. The class is designed to ensurecitizens have the basic skills to act safely while assisting themselves, their families, and neighborsduring a major disaster. CERTmembers may also volunteer toassist the city when resources arestretched to the limits. In addition to the 30 graduates there were another15 trainees who completed atleast a portion of their CERTtraining or completed trainingfor other local CERT programs. The participants were mainlyfrom Sierra Madre but also included residents from Arcadia, Claremont, Monrovia, Montclair, Pasadena, and South Pasadena. A total of 86 people wereinvolved in the final day’s exerciseincluded half a dozen firefightersfrom the Sierra Madre Fire Department. CERT President Dennis Burton oversaw the training which involved morethan 15 members of Sierra Madre CERT who ran the Incident Command Post. Sierra Madre Middle School’s Service Club provided 16 “victims” who sufferedfrom an array of cuts and bruises, severe burns, arterial bleeds, brokenbones, and severe head wounds. Photographic and video documentationof the event was provided by Gary Hood and Steve Wylie, includingthe use of a drone to get a birds-eye view of the disaster exercise. CERT particularly expresses gratitude to Sierra Madre CityManager Gabriel Engeland for fully supporting CERT and allowingthe use of the Sierra Madre Emergency Operations Center for thetraining. Administrative Assistant Laura Aguilar helped coordinatethe week’s activities, including the use of the City Council Chambersfor the search and rescue operations. Captain Goth helped coordinatethe fire department’s training in fire suppression and cribbing whichwas supervised by Captain Christmas on Saturday. After the training there was a written test and evaluation, and then the graduates were awarded FEMA certificates by Los AngelesFunding for Sierra Madre CERT is made possible through grantsCounty Sheriff ’s Department volunteer CERT Instructor Dudleyfrom the Los Angeles County Office of Disaster Management, SierraRainey. As part of the training, graduates receive a CERT backpackMadre Civic Club, Sierra Madre Woman’s Club, and Wayne Williamswith their personal protection equipment provided by the Losof Professional Advisory Services in Arcadia. CERT also holds aAngeles County Office of Disaster Management Area D Coordinator,fundraiser each year selling glow sticks on Halloween.
